Tax Tax Tax!

St Paul—They don’t call liberals tax and spenders for nothing.

First comes a transportation bill that raises a billion dollars in new taxes, now the House comes along with a Tax bill that raises income taxes by $433 million.

That’s a far cry from what House Speaker Margaret Kelliher was pitching just before the election. In a November 2 interview on MPR’s Midday program with Gary Eichten, Kelliher assured Minnesotans that the DFL would not be on a tax-raising spree if they won the majority:

Gary Eichten: "Other than a possible gas tax increase, do you see any need to raise taxes in the next couple of years?"

Maragaret Anderson Kelliher: "No."

The DFL House proposal creates a fourth income tax rate for high income earners, and dedicates the revenue to “property tax relief,” which could include just shipping the cash to local governments to spend as they will.

“Governor Pawlenty is right to call this a ‘taxapaloosa,’ a festival of tax increases,” said Taxpayers League President Phil Krinkie. “With a $2 billion budget surplus, the liberals are still finding ways to increase taxes by billions of dollars. Hopefully, this spring we’ll see more Governor’s vetoes than we see dandelions on the Capitol Mall.”

The Taxpayers League is Minnesota’s largest taxpayer advocacy organization.
