Pawlenty Gets It!

St Paul—Governor Tim Pawlenty delivered a strong message in his State of the State address in St. Cloud today: tax increases are not the way to spur Minnesota’s economy.

Vowing today to use his veto should the Legislature start “rummaging around in [taxpayers’] pockets looking for more” money, Pawlenty threw down the gauntlet. He is willing to work with the State Legislature on the big issues facing Minnesota, including finding more resources for transportation, reforming health care, and solving the budget deficit. But he will veto any tax increase.

“Minnesota’s economy is looking fragile, and raising taxes slows economic growth,” said Taxpayers League of Minnesota President Phil Krinkie. “Governor Pawlenty is right to reject tax increases. Minnesotans want a bigger job market, not bigger government.

“Pawlenty is right to focus on tax reform. Our current tax climate is a drag on economic growth, and needs an overhaul,” Krinkie added.

“Unfortunately Legislators don’t seem to be getting the message that tax increases are off the table. Pawlenty will almost surely have to use his veto pen again,” Krinkie concluded.
