In the midst of economic chaos and rising prices, another tax increase hits consumers

ST. PAUL—Phil Krinkie, President of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota, noted today that in the midst of all the economic uncertainty and rising energy and food prices consumers will be taking yet another hit to their pocketbooks this week.

The next phase in the increase in the gas tax, approved in this year’s legislative session over the Governor’s veto, is scheduled to take effect October 1st.  The gas tax will rise by another 3 cents.

“Consumers are being hit on all sides. Food prices have been going up. Energy prices too. Economic uncertainty is worrying everybody. The last thing taxpayers need right now is another tax increase to take a bite out of their budget.

“Working families’ budgets are already squeezed. Adding a tax increase on top of already high prices is adding insult to injury,” said Phil Krinkie.

The Taxpayers League of MN is the state’s largest taxpayer advocacy organization.
