ST. PAUL – Sen. Rod Grams, Chairman of the “No Constitutional Tax Increase” campaign joined Taxpayers League of Minnesota President Phil Krinkie in kicking of the vote “No Constitutional Tax Increase” campaign along with others who oppose the $11 billion tax increase.

On the election ballot Nov. 4th is a ballot question that if passed, would create a constitutional amendment adding 3/8 of a percent sales tax on top of one of the highest sales tax rates in the country.  Minnesota already has a sales tax rate of 6.5%.  This $11 billion tax increase is being promoted by hundreds of special interest groups who want more taxpayer dollars for their pet projects.

“While preserving our natural resources is a good cause, this is a misguided effort at achieving appropriate environmental spending while providing unnecessary state funding for arts and cultural heritage projects,” Grams said.  “This ballot initiative abuses the state constitution by creating a multi-billion dollar tax increase in constitutional form.”

“Each year the state and local governments spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to fund everything from wild life habitat to the Guthrie Theatre, from local parks to the Como Zoo,” Krinkie said.  “The government doesn’t need to spend another $11 billion.”
