The drama, the suspense, the hard work, the long hours, the hyperbolic rhetoric, and now — on what otherwise would have been the final day of the largest hand recount in Minnesota history — it comes down to this:  

Minnesota predicts $5.28 billion deficit over next two years
State finance experts on Thursday forecast a $4.85 billion shortfall for the next two-year state budget, plus a $426 million hole in the current budget that ends June 30. 

Job losses a big reason for state's budget shortfall
A continued string of job losses through next year is what's expected to fuel Minnesota's projected budget deficit of $5.28 billion over the next 2 1/2 years.
