THE CORNER

A Well-Deserved Honor:
Andy McCarthy received the Center for Security Policy’s “Mightier Pen” award in New York City Thursday "in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the safety of this country and the well-being of its people through his essays about the national security and the law" published in National Review and other publications. The Center’s president, Frank J. Gaffney Jr., in extending the tribute noted that like William F. Buckley Jr. -- an earlier recipient of the award -- Andy has had an extraordinary influence on the senior-most levels of the government and with the American people through his highly evocative . . . $150,000 in Clothes vs. $150,000 in Airplane Charges:
Governor Palin's $150,000 wardrobe malfunction generated months of media mockery. Will that same MSM devote the comparable attention to Governor Richardson's $150,000 in unpaid airline tickets?
Bill Richardson would do a lot of global jet-setting as commerce secretary, but he’s still on the hook for more than $150,000 in domestic airfare footed by influential home state allies. During his failed bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, crisscrossed the country partly on corporate jets controlled by influential New Mexicans with deep pockets — including one just elected to Congress. The airfare debt creates uncomfortable optics for Richardson, . . . Go

The Grand Old Duke of York:
You remember the nursery rhyme? It seems perfectly to describe the sudden panicked retreat from the Liberal-NDP attempt to take power in Ottawa without an election ...
Leadership candidate Michael Ignatieff said the coalition needs to explore options other than bringing the government down next month, said the source. Other speakers, such as Nova Scotia MP Mike Savage and Yukon MP Larry Bagnall offered a similar view. David McGuinty, the Ottawa MP, said that the Governor-General had scolded all MPs and essentially told them to go home and play nice. He said the party needs more options and should meet with . . . Eco-Tourists Destroying the Environment:
No doubt on an expedition to Antarctica to witness the destruction of the environment by people less conscientious than themselves (who cares about the odd fuel leak when your heart is in the right place?):
A cruise ship carrying 122 people was stranded Thursday on the coast of Antarctica after striking ice, officials said, officials said.
Mariano Memolli of the Argentina Antarctic Directorate told Argentina's TodoNoticias (TN) Television a naval boat and plane were dispatched to evacuate the passengers of the Ushuaia, as a precaution.
The ship, carrying 89 passengers and 33 crew members, was losing fuel and taking on water but . . . Go

“Truth Serum”: Ready for a Comeback?:
Indian police have revealed that they plan to question the surviving terrorist from last week’s Mumbai attacks with the help of “narco-analysis” -- in other words, a “truth serum.” Truth serums are a class of barbiturates (sodium pentothal is the most common) that simultaneously increase one’s desire to talk and decrease one’s ability to think, with predictable results: The subject says a lot, and since it usually takes some mental effort to sustain a lie, the assumption is that at least part of what he says will be true. The effect is similar to getting drunk, but it’s easier for . . . Go
KUDLOW'S MONEY POLITIC$

Bailout Nation, Cont.:
The bailout-nation saga continued today as the Little Three carmakers from Detroit testified all day in front of the Senate Banking Committee. So far, the best thing I heard was from Sen. Robert Corker of Tennessee.Mr. Corker wants a deal where, first, carmakers must restructure all their debt at some price, perhaps 30 cents on the dollar. But the bond owners must be satisfied so the government doesn’t have to pick up the tab. Second, Mr. Corker wants carmakers to get their worker-compensation levels exactly equal to those of the Japanese transplants in Detroit south. That means about $48 total . . . Go
THE CAMPAIGN SPOT

Jerry Springer, Al Franken... and Chris Matthews?:
How eager are Pennsylvania Democrats to concede what will probably be a pretty winnable race against Sen. Arlen Specter to some television show host blowhard?
Doesn't any Keystone State Democrat who's actually been elected to office want to take a shot at that seat? Or are he and Franken (and Jerry Springer!) a sign that Democrats now outsource their Senate races to whoever's on T.V. these days? . . . Go
