DFL Leadership Didn’t Finish Their Work, Governor Will Resolve Budget Deficit

ST. PAUL – Today, Governor Pawlenty announced his unallotment reductions in order to solve the state’s projected $2.676 billion dollar budget gap.  Governor Pawlenty said that he would use his unallotment authority to solve the state deficit if the state legislature couldn’t come to a solution without raising taxes.  With the legislative session coming to an end in May without coming to an agreement on solving the state deficit, Governor Pawlenty followed through on his commitment to solve the deficit himself.

“The State Legislature was in session for five months and the Governor had said from the beginning that he would oppose resolving the deficit by raising taxes in a struggling economy,” said Taxpayers League of Minnesota President Phil Krinkie.  “The failure of the DFL leadership to find compromise has forced the Governor to solve the state budget.”  Krinkie added, “We applaud the Governor’s position against tax increases and hope legislative leaders will cooperate with the administration.”
