Governor Won’t Call Special Session if Work Not Done By Monday and Will Balance Budget Himself

ST. PAUL – After four months of denial on the part of the DFL leadership, Gov. Pawlenty announced that he would sign all the legislative approved appropriation bills with the necessary line item vetoes to bring the state budget into balance, avoiding the need for a special session.  Both House and Senate leaders seem to be shocked by Governor Pawlenty’s actions.

“We applaud Governor Pawlenty’s leadership rather than listening to more whining from the Democrats whose only solution has been to raise taxes on every working Minnesotan,” said Taxpayers League of Minnesota President Phil Krinkie.  “Even with their billion dollar tax proposal that they passed last week, House and Senate DFL leadership are still two billion dollars short of solving the budget deficit.”

“It’s inevitable that the Legislature won’t get their work done on time and so they want to waste more of the taxpayer’s dollar by going into a special session,” added Krinkie.  “With three days to go until the end of session, I applaud the Governor’s proposal of not calling the State Legislature back and saving taxpayer’s money by solving the state budget deficit himself if no real solution is brought forward.”
