1.  2009 Tax Rally is Coming!

It’s time again to come together and rally for the conservative cause!  The 2009 Tax Rally will be Saturday, May 2nd from 11am-4pm at the State Capitol in St. Paul.  Join the Taxpayers League and many other conservative organizations for a great line up of speakers, food, fun, and entertainment.  If you’re fed up with all the bailouts, tax increase proposals, and liberal spenders, you’ll want to come to the Tax Rally and find new ways you can get involved in the cause.  Email us to let us know you plan to attend.  Then stay tuned for more details.

There’s also a Minnesota Tea Party scheduled for April 15th at the Capitol Steps.  Information for that can be found here

2.  Sign up Now to Become a Local Taxpayer Watchdog!

Tired of your local taxes rising at the city and county level?  Fight back by joining us for an inspiring and fun-filled training session on Saturday, May 9th, to learn how to form a local government watchdog group in your area.  The Taxpayers League of Minnesota and the Freedom Foundation of Minnesota will be hosting the training session from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Taxpayers League office:  2048 Old Highway 8 NW in New Brighton.  Call 651-294-3590, ext. 204 or email Brad Biers to reserve your spot or to get more information.

3.  Highest Income Tax Rate in the Country?

Finally the House DFLers have come forward with their plan to solve the state's $6 billion budget deficit. Does it include tax increases? You bet!

Despite Speaker Anderson-Kelliher saying Democrats want a "fair and responsible budget", the House DFL plan proposes $1.5 billion in tax increases. Although the plan gives little detail, it appears they will attempt to increase the income tax.  Liberals like to say that they will only tax the "rich," which has somehow come to mean those making $250,000 or more.  But raising those people's state income taxes would not bring in nearly enough to amount to $1.5 billion. Thus, we can only read between the lines and conclude that the DFL budget proposal will tax much, much more than that.

Add to that the fact that Minnesota is already a high tax state, and increased income taxes make for a rather ugly picture. Quoted in a recent Star Tribune article, State Revenue Commissioner Ward Einess said, "You're not seeing a lot of details because if you have to rely on the income tax, you quickly come to the realization that we'll end up with the highest income tax in the country."

Stay tuned!  A budget battle is coming to a state Capitol near you!

4.  Bailoutrage

“We want our money back and we want our money back now for the taxpayers.”  That’s a quote from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the wake of last week’s AIG uproar.  Liberals and the media (or is that redundant) grew outraged as AIG paid previously contracted bonuses to employees.  The public also became upset because the real questions weren’t being posed.

First of all, since when does Nancy Pelosi care about the taxpayers?  If she or any of the other tax-loving liberals leading Congress cared about the taxpayers, no taxpayer money would have gone to pay AIG bonuses because no taxpayer money would have gone to bailout AIG.

Second, a question asked at local conservative blog Freedom Dogs:  “Is the outrage over the bonuses in proportion to the outrage over the bailout itself?”  The answer of course is no.

The outrage last week over AIG bonuses was a media blitz to cover up the real issue of how the federal government is giving out such large sums of taxpayer money in the first place and then continuing to kill the dollar’s value by purchasing another $1 trillion in securities to pump into the economy.
