With another legislative session about to start February 4, the prospect of state lawmakers putting Minnesota deeper in debt looms large.

The politicians will tell you the state constitution requires a balanced budget, that revenues must match expenditures. But like the Hertz rental car commercials… “Not exactly.”

Minnesota has a spending problem, not a revenue problem

ST. PAUL - In a surprise announcement last week, Senator Dick Day (R-Owatonna) said he will resign from the State Senate to lead a newly organized effort to bring state-operated slot machines and more revenue to Minnesota. Unwilling to solve the state's budget shortfall with fiscal restraint, the newly minted president of "Racino Now" aims to feed the growing beast of government by installing slots at Canterbury and Running Aces.

Last week’s decision to add three stations to the central corridor light rail line is yet one more example of the “build it at any price” mentality.

Planning for a rail connection between Minneapolis and St. Paul has been in the works for over 20 years. In the early 1990’s, the major debate was over three options for the route. The three options were: University Avenue, the I-94 corridor or the existing rail lines a couple miles north of University Avenue. Each proposed option had its pluses and minuses, but in the end, the University Avenue plan won out.
